우리는 (15): 탐욕때문에 속는다
We Are Deceived by Greed
로마서7:7-13
요즈음,‘요한 하리’라는 분이 쓴 <도둑맞은 집중력, 어크로스 출판>이라는 책을 읽고 있다. 그 책 가운데서 이런 통계를 소개한다. Lately, I've been reading a book by John Hari called <Stolen Focus>. Here are some of the statistics in the book:
“미국인의 평균 스크린타임은 3 시간15분이다. 우리는 24시간 동안 핸드폰을 2,617번 만진다.”[1]
"The average American screen time is 3 hours and 15 minutes. We touch our phones 2,617 times in 24 hours."
속도가 빠른 핸드폰과 인터넷을 자주 사용하는 시대에 나타난 부작용 중 하나가 집중력의 저하라는 것이다.[2] 그리고 구글 직원들 사이에서 퍼져있는 말이 있는데, 그것은“빠르지 않으면 망한다”는 것이다. 그런데 그 빠른 속도는 집중력을 저하시키고, 반대로 느린 속도는 집중력을 키운다고한다.[3]
One of the side effects of the age of fast cell phones and frequent use of the Internet is a decrease in concentration. And there's a saying that's spreading among Google employees: "If you're not fast, you're doomed." However, it is said that the fast speed decreases concentration, and on the contrary, the slow speed increases concentration.
우리는 빠른 시대의 혜택을 받고 있지만, 반대로 잃어버리는 것들도 많다고한다. 그 중 하나가 바로 집중력을 잃어버리는 것이다. 좀 더 강하게 표현하면 집중력을 도둑맞고 있다는 것이다. 이런 현상들이 왜 일어나는가?
It is said that we are benefiting from the fast times, but on the contrary, there are many things that we are losing. One of them is the loss of concentration. To put it more strongly, it's that your concentration is being stolen. Why does this happen?
돈을 빨리 많이 벌어야한다는 마음, 빨리 일을 성취하고 싶은 마음, 빨리 성공하고 싶은 마음때문일 것이다. 그런 마음을 성경에서는 탐욕 혹은 탐심이라는 말로 표현했다.
It may be because of the desire to make a lot of money quickly, the desire to accomplish things quickly, and the desire to succeed quickly. In the Bible, this feeling is expressed by the word greed or covetousness.
그래서 성경은 탐욕때문에 도둑맞는 것들을 지켜준다는 생각을 하게되었다. 특별히 율법이 그 역할을 감당하고 있다. So I came to think that the Bible protects things that are stolen because of greed. In particular, the law plays a role.
율법이 인간의 한계를 드러나게 해주기때문에, 결국 우리에게 자유를 주는 복음(예수 그리스도)에 마음과 시선을 돌리게한다. Because the law exposes human limitations, it turns our minds and eyes to the gospel (Jesus Christ), which in turn gives us freedom.
그래서 탐욕때문에 우리의 소중한 것들을 도둑맞는 일에서 지켜준다는 믿음을 갖게되었다.
So I came to believe that greed would protect our precious things from being stolen.
본문 내용 및 해석
자, 오늘 본문에서, 율법에 대한 사도바울의 설명을 듣고, 그럼 율법이 더 이상 필요없다는 말인가? 그리고 율법이 죄란 말인가? 이렇게 반론을 제기하는 사람들에게 바울은 아니다. 율법이 하는 일들이 따로 있다. 율법은 율법대로 좋은 기능을 하고 있다고 설명을 하고있다.
Now, in today's text, after listening to the Apostle Paul's explanation of the law, does that mean that the law is no longer necessary? And is the law a sin? To those who raise this objection, it is not Paul. There are other things that the law does. It explains that the law functions well according to the law.
그렇다면 본문에서 율법이 하는 일이 무엇이라고 말해주는가? So what does the text tell us about what the law does?
첫째, 탐심이 죄라는 것을 드러나게한다 (7절).
First, The Law reveals Sin (v.7).
둘째, 죄를 불러 일으킨다 (8-9절).
Second, The Law Arouses Sin (vv.8-9).
셋째, 죄를 짓게하여 죽음에 이르게한다 (10-11절).
Third, the Law kills (vv.10-11)
넷째, 죄를 죄답게한다 (12-13절)
Fourth, The Law Showes the Sinfulness of Sin (vv.12-13).
이들 네 개 역할 중에 가장 기본이 되는 첫번째를 중점적으로 다루려고 한다. 그래서 탐심때문에 속아서 죄를 짓는 우리들을 발견하게 하고, 탐심때문에 속아서 죄를 짓지 않는 방법으로 찾아보려고 한다.
I will focus on the first, which is the most basic of these four roles. That is why I will try to find those of us who are deceived by covetousness and commit sin, and to find a way not to sin because of covetousness.
자, 그러면 오늘은 대표로 첫 번째 율법의 기능을 살펴보기로하자.
So, let's take a look at the first function of the law as a representative today.
율법은, 첫째, 탐심이 죄라는 것을 드러나게한다 (7절).
First, The Law reveals Sin (v.7).
- 그러면 우리가 무엇이라고 말을 하겠습니까? 율법이 죄입니까? 그럴 수 없습니다. 그러나 율법에 비추어 보지 않았다면, 나는 죄가 무엇인지 알지 못하였을 것입니다. 율법에 "탐 내지 말아라" 하지 않았다면, 나는 탐심이 무엇인지를 알지 못하였을 것입니다.
- What shall we say, then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! Indeed I would not have known what sin was except through the law. For I would not have known what coveting really was if the law had not said, "Do not covet."
7절을 통하여 저자 바울은, 그렇다면“율법이 죄냐”아니다! Throughout verse 7, the author Paul says, "Is the law a sin?"
바울이 지금까지 율법에 대해 부정적인 견해를 취한 것은 율법으로는 구원에 이를 수 없으며, 사람이 육신의 지배를 받을 때는 율법이 도리어 죄를 깨닫게 하고, 죄의 탐욕에 사로잡히게 한다는 사실을 지적하기 위한 것이었다.
Paul's negative view of the law up until now was to point out that the law does not lead to salvation, and that when man is under the control of the flesh, the law convicts him of sin and makes him captivated by the greed of sin.
즉, 죄는 율법 때문에 생성되는 것도 아니며 율법안에 있는 것도 아니다. 죄는 바로 우리 안에 탐심이라는 모습으로 자리잡고 있다는 것을 강조하고 있다. 다만 율법은 그 탐심이라는 것을 죄로 규정하고 있다. 그래서 율법은 죄를 깨닫게 해주는 데에 꼭 필요하다는 것을 강조하고 있다.
In other words, sin is not created by the law, nor is it in the law. It emphasizes that sin has a place in us in the form of covetousness. However, the law defines covetousness as a sin. Thus, it is emphasized that the law is necessary for the conviction of sin.
그런가 하면, 바울은 십계명 중 열번째 계명인 탐심-네 이웃을 탐내지 마라-을 경계하는 구절을 언급한다.
On the other hand, Paul refers to the tenth of the Ten Commandments, which warns against covetousness—Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor.
율법은 인간의 내면에 들어있는 것들을 드러내주는 거울역할을 한다. 그리고 인간이 얼마나 더러운 존재인가를 드러내 보여준다.
The law is a mirror that reveals the inner man and shows us how dirty we are (James1:22-25).
이 탐심은 다른 9가지 계명들을 지키지 못하도록 방해역할을 한다. 탐심이라는 죄는 아주 교활하기 짝이 없어서 대부분 사람들이 잘 알아차리지 못한다. 그러나 하나님의 말씀(율법)은 그것을 밝히 드러낸다.
Covetousness leads to the breaking of the other commandments! It is an insidious sin that most people never recognize in their own lives, but God’s law reveals it.
탐심은 인간의 심성 속에 은밀하게 자리잡고 있어서, 실제적인 범법 행위가 아니기 때문에 사람들이 죄로 깨닫지 못한다. 그러나 율법은 인간의 심성에서 일어날 수 있는 악한 동기도 죄라고 가르쳐 줌으로써 죄를 깨닫게 하여 하나님의 의를 드러낸다.
Covetousness is so secretly situated in the human heart that it is not a real transgression, and therefore people do not recognize it as sin. But the law reveals God's righteousness by convicting sin by teaching that the evil motives that may arise in the human heart are also sin.
인간 사회에서는 '탐심'으로는 죄가 성립되는게 아니지만, 하나님 앞에서는 모든 악한 동기조차 죄로 규정된다. 즉, 타락한 인간의 죄는 탐욕에서 출발한다. 이것은 또한 우상 숭배와 같다고 골로새서 3:5에서 확실하게 언급하고 있다.
In human society, covetousness does not constitute sin, but before God, even evil motives are defined as sin. In other words, the sin of fallen man begins with greed. This is also the same as idolatry, as Colossians 3:5 clearly states.
- 그러므로 땅에 속한 지체의 일들, 곧 음행과 더러움과 정욕과 악한 욕망과 탐욕을 죽이십시오. 탐욕은 우상숭배입니다.
- Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.
바울이 '탐욕'을 우상 숭배와 같이 취급한 이유는 둘다 '헛된 것'을 추구하면서 하나님과 원수가 되기 때문이다.
The reason Paul treats "greed" like idolatry is that both pursue "vanity" and become enmity with God.
그런 탐욕때문에 헛된 것을 추구하다보면, 하나님을 향하는 집중력을 쉽게 빼앗긴다. 하나님을 향한 집중력을 빼앗기다보면 결국 거짓에 속아 넘어가게 된다. 그래서 우리 속에 있는 좋은 것 (믿음)을 도둑맞게 된다.
If you pursue vain things because of such greed, you will easily lose your focus on God. If you lose focus on God, you will end up being deceived by lies. So the good things (faith) in us are stolen.
마가복음 10:17-27에 나오는 부자 관원은 율법을 사용하여 죄를 드러내고 사람에게 구세주가 필요하다는 것을 보여주는 좋은 예입니다.
The rich ruler in Mark 10:17-27 is a good example of the use of the law to reveal sin and show a man his need for a Savior.
그 청년은 겉으로는 매우 도덕적이었지만, 내면의 죄에 직면한 적이 없었습니다. 예수께서는 율법이 그를 구원할 것이기 때문에 그에게 율법에 대해 말씀하지 않으셨습니다.
The young man was very moral outwardly, but he had never faced the sins within. Jesus did not tell him about the law because the law would save him;
그 청년이 자신의 죄악을 깨닫지 못했기 때문에 그에게 율법에 대해 말씀하셨습니다. 사실, 그는 간통을 저지르거나, 누군가를 강탈하거나, 거짓 증언을 하거나, 부모를 모독한 적이 없지만 탐욕은 어떨까요?
He told him about the law because the young man did not realize his own sinfulness. True, he had never committed adultery, robbed anyone, given false witness, or dis- honored his parents, but what about covetousness?
예수께서 그에게 자신의 물건을 팔아 가난한 사람들에게 주라고 말씀하셨을 때, 그 사람은 큰 슬픔에 잠겨 떠났습니다. "탐내지 말라"는 계명은 그가 실제로 얼마나 죄인인지 그에게 보여주었습니다! 그는 자신의 죄를 인정하기는커녕 그리스도를 거부하고 회개하지 않은 채 떠났습니다.
When Jesus told him to sell his goods and give to the poor, the man went away in great sorrow. The commandment, "Thou shalt not covet," had revealed to him what a sinner he really was! Instead of admitting his sin, he rejected Christ and went away unconverted.
그 부자 청년은 재물에 대한 탐심때문에 하나님을 향한 집중력이 흐려졌습니다. 그리고 매우 큰 것을 놓쳤습니다. 탐심때문에 영원한 가치가 있는 예수 그리스도를 따르는 것을 도둑을 맞았다고 해야 적절할 것입니다.
The rich young man's covetousness for riches distracted him from God. And missed a very big one. It would be appropriate to say that our covetousness robbed us of our eternal value, following Jesus Christ.
그렇다면 탐욕때문에 속아서 도둑맞게 되는 일들을 방지하려면 어떻게 해야할까? 밥 버포드라는 분이 그의 책에서 이런 고백을 했다.
“나이가 들면서 꼭 지키며 살고 싶은 것들을 일목요연하게 정리한 일종의‘노후 실천목록’을 만들게 되었다. 내 바람을 충족하지 못하는 때가 생각보다 많지만, 이런 목록을 만들면 적어도 내가 달성하려고 애를 쓰고 있는 것이 무엇인지 기억하며 살 수 있다. 장담하건대 그것은 투쟁이다.”[밥 버포드Bob Buford 저, 이창신 역, 하프타임3 (서울:국제제자훈련원, 2018), 94.]
"As I've gotten older, I've come to make a kind of 'retirement action list' that summarizes the things I want to keep in my life. There are more times when I don't meet my desires than I think, but making a list like this can help me at least remember what I'm trying to achieve. I assure you, it's a struggle.”
그래서 저도 지난 주간 <제124차 국제가정교회 목회자 컨퍼런스>를 다녀오면서 배운 것들 중에서 실천 목록을 적어보았다. 그 것을 목회자 코너에 적어놓았으니 참고하시기 바란다.
That's why I've written down a list of things I've learned from my 124th International House Church Pastors' Conference last week. I wrote it down in the pastor's corner, so please refer to it.
점점 나이를 먹으면서, 탐욕에 속아서 도둑 맞지 않기 위해서 여러분들도 실천목록을 적어보자. 매주일 예배시간 후에, 그날 혹은 그 주간에 아니면 평생 실천목록을 적어보자.
As you get older, in order to avoid being deceived by greed and thieved, you should also write down a list of actions. Write down a list of actions you have taken each Sunday after worship time, that day, or week, or for the rest of your life.
내 바램대로 충족을 시키지 못할 때가 생각보다 많겠지만, 이런 목록들을 만들면 적어도 내가 달성하려고 애를 쓰고 있는 것이 무엇인지 기억하며 살 수 있다. 그럴 때 탐욕때문에 이 세상의 유혹에 속아서 도둑맞는 일을 많이 줄일 수 있을 것이다,
There will be more times than you think you won't be able to fulfill your wishes, but if you make a list like this, you can at least remember what you're trying to achieve. Then you will be able to greatly reduce the number of people who are deceived by the temptations of this world because of greed, and are robbed.
자, 이제 여러분 각자에게도 달성하고 싶은 것들이 무엇인지 생각해보고 기록해보자. 그리고 그것을 위해 애를 써보자. 그럴 때, 엉뚱한 탐욕에 속아서 도둑맞는 일을 많이 줄일 수 있을 것이다.
Now, think about what you want to accomplish for each of you and write it down. And let's work for it. In that way, you will be able to save yourself a lot of money from being deceived by unbridled greed.
결론; 복음이 답이다.
Conclusion; The gospel is the answer.
예수의 마음, 예수의 정신을 본 받으며 그 분의 발자취를 따라가는 것이다. It is to imitate the heart of Jesus, the spirit of Jesus, and to follow in His footsteps.
결단과 헌신- Making a Decision and Commitment Time;
이렇게 기도하면서 헌신과 결단의 시간을 가집시다.
As we pray, let us make a commitment and a decision.
주님, 저에게 돈에 대한 탐욕, 취미생활에 대한 탐욕, 건강에 대한 탐욕, 음식에 대한 탐욕을 줄여 주시어, 탐욕이라는 거짓 우상을 버리고 오직 예수만 따르게 하소서.
Lord, please make my greed for money, my greed for my hobbies, my greed for health, my greed for food, and the false idol of greed a little so that I may follow Jesus alone.
